              4 & 18 & 25 November & 2 December 2019

The key objective of this year's Prague November Talks 2019 theme “TRANSFORMATIONS: On our transforming profession in the transforming world“ is to demonstrate the changing and intimate relationship between architecture, landscape architecture, urbanism and design - the overlapping of disciplines, the change of scale. The lectures of four impoprtant international architects, urban designers and planners, a landscape architect and an urban theoretician, from France, United Kingdom, Canada and China, will take place on four Monday November and December evenings at the Gočár aula, Faculty of Architecture CTU.

The program is sponsored by the non-profit STO Foundation and has been running successfully in paralel every November in Prague, London, Paris, Milan, Stuttgart and Graz. The November Talks programme started in 2006 and Prague joined it in 2015 http://www.sto-stiftung.de/en/november-talks/standard.html. The history of our speakers - Farshid Moussavi, Kees Christiaanse, Marc Barani, Vasa Perovic and others http://www.sto-stiftung.de/en/november-talks/standard.html?filter_4_txt%5B%5D=13504

The Brief: The former sugar plant territory and the area of Černý kůň (Black Horse) - two areas proposed by Prague Metropolitan plan as areas of transformation and their areas of interest. They need to find new identity. We will develop urban strategies of future progress in various scales and detail. The outputs may vary from large scale visons of the whole part of the city to urban studies or regulation plans, both urban design-spatial plannig and landscape design. We will explore different aproaches, according to particular students demands and desire. The topic, but slightly different assignment, will be elaborated in collaboration with another studio from CTU and with studio of Giuseppe Cinà from Politecnico di Torino & Università di Torino. Joint workshop of the students and tutors of these three studios will take place from April 4th - 8th in Prague.

The experimental design studio Achten+Pavlíček deals with parametric design, design performance, and design to production. The philosophy of the studio is to look at contemporary architectural theory and work done in offices such as Foster + Partners, UN Studio, MVRDV, and BIG, to name a few. We advance a design-by-research approach, in which a critical stance towards the problem is supported by systematic and rigorous testing of alternatives. In this semester we look at infrastructural works such as bridges in Prague and Air Traffic Control Tower of Vaclav Havel International Airport.

              Innovative structure
Studio FLO│W is of the opinion that a digitally-driven architecture should be flexible, interactive and adaptable. Software is a driving force in all the phases of the structure planning and rise of the building′s architecture. A characteristic feature is continuous effort of innovation. Architecture becomes inspired by the natural processes projecting into the procedure of planning based on application of evolutionary technologies enriched both by advanced simulations, animations and the tools of building structure design, and by parametric design system and script methods. By the creative engagement of algorithms an architect, a designer or a student can generate endless number of similar structures of buildings, which means a geometry output of predetermined dimensional, referential and functional dependencies. The structure is defined by algorithms entered by a row of variables as, for example, the needs of users, climate parameters, behaviour, a number and dimension of the particular components. If the algorithmic scripts that determine the shape and location of the components are written additionally in a rather general way, it is possible to change the input parameters, and thus also the final design of the building structure. The evolutionary models make possible the combination of atomic structure and mechanic properties of the material with macro behaviour of the building structure as a whole embodied into the dynamic environment. Evolutionary inspired process of planning is understood as a process of optimation, where anadequate solution can be found in the space of all possible solutions. Architecture and urbanism can be based on the swarm theory, where the built environment is defined as a space that is formed not only by smart components, but also by synthetic biology, which not only with each other, but also with the users mutually cooperate. We live in the time of Internet of Things, related with virtualisation and technologies, such as analysis of Big Data, computer simulations, augmented reality, 3D print, and robots. The aim is to connect people and processes into a single functional organism, which will also lively communicate with its environment. The digitally-driven architecture aims at the paradigmatic shift from static via interactive to adaptable structures sensitive to application of materials and exploitation of natural sources. The outputs are evaluated and presented not only by the means of posters, but first of all through videos, virtual reality and models on the principle of e-manufacturing technic.

The Department of Research, Science and Arts provides administrative and organizational support for English speaking PhD students and candidates.

          4. The Faculty of Architecture, Czech Technical University in Prague (FA CTU) offers doctoral study programme Architecture and Urbanism in four fields of study:

And in the doctoral study programme Design in the field of study:

            • P 8208 V043 / Industrial Design / PD

Annually, there are 20-40 new students accepted into both Czech and English Doctoral study programme. The applicants have to hold a master´s degree in the same field or related field. The entrance procedure consists of assembly of required documents and in some cases of interview with an entrance exam commission. The Doctoral study programme is carried out through full-time or combined (part-time) form of study. Both full-time and part-time studies at CTU generally take 4 years, scheduled into 8 semesters including the Doctoral Thesis submission. Each doctoral candidate is supervised by a tutor who prepares for him/her an Individual Study Plan with the courses to be accomplished in the first two years of the doctoral study programme. The PhD candidate goes through regular evaluation and takes part in two compulsory student workshops within first two years of studies. Successful completion of the final State Doctoral Examination is pre-requisite for the presentation and defence of the Doctoral Thesis.

Industrial Topography of the Czech Republic is the title of a large ongoing research project run by the Research Centre for Industrial Heritage. It produced series of guidebooks and publications, information summaries and maps that systematically chart each of the industrial regions of the Czech Republic in depth and detail larger than ever before. It offers evidence of the extraordinary density and typological and architectural diversity of industrial structures on the central European territory. Its aim is to draw public attention towards their existence, context, conservation and finding appropriate new uses.

Shared workplace of CTU and the Academy of Mucical Arts creates a platform for international collaboration of students and teachers of technical and artistic disciplines. It develops and initiates a new interdisciplinary model of education and research, linking the Czech technical, artistic, scientific and humanistic schools and nonacademic partners, and provides a space for dialogue across diverse areas of knowledge. The aim is to create an environment for creative collaboration of students, teachers, scientists and researchers from different disciplines to develop new forms of cooperation with the commercial sector and the public, to examine the use of unconventional and innovative technical solutions in different areas of society.

Current construction material science focuses on biological and synthetic structures. It is sometimes called biomateriomics and focuses on analyzing the role of the material in the context of biological processes, to the transfer of principles of biological materials towards biomimetic and biology inspired uses, and to the study of the interface between living and nonliving systems. The research in construction material science leads to high performance materials based on de novo understanding of biological material processes. The result of the construction materials and structures with properties that are characterized by their selfconstruction and selfmaintenance, their ability to adapt and develop and provide a variety of functions that can be controlled by external stimuli.

Publications and books in which the research results of the Institute of Theory and History of Architecture are transmitted are of two basic types: the first type researches architectures of excellent artistic and technical performance and examines their history, using e.g. iconic architectural works of Prague as examples, the second type researches simple, everyday activities and architecture, such as conventional apartment buildings and their hidden history or industrial architecture, so abundant in the past and currently newly acquired. The many architectural publications are completed by publications which are the result of research on architects and on architecture of key historical periods of domestic architecture.
